We have a long relationship with the local community making homes safer by removing asbestos and lead from personal residences. Many homes built prior to 1984 are at risk for containing asbestos and lead. Lead was common in paints and asbestos was common in a variety of materials such as sheet vinyl, tile and mastic (adhesive), transite siding, textured (popcorn) ceiling and walls, drywall and insulation. Asbestos was used in these materials because of very good fire resistance and strength.
Removing these asbestos containing materials is dangerous, especially when the asbestos fibers are disturbed and become airborne. The US government as well as Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska governments each have regulations covering the proper methods for removing these asbestos containing materials.
If you think your home may have asbestos:
Work with a testing firm to ensure these asbestos containing materials are identified prior to repairing or renovating the material. This identifies the potential for releasing the asbestos fibers into the air. Please call us to discuss the project and obtain contact information of certified inspectors. If the you decide not to have the home tested for asbestos, you should test any suspect materials as asbestos containing. The EPA recommends these possible actions for asbestos materials:
- As long as it is in good condition and not likely to be disturbed, it most likely can be left in place.
- Encapsulate the material, so that it will not be disturbed. This can be done by sealing the material. This would typically work in situations where the material is still in good condition.
- Enclose the material. This can be done by covering the material with another non-asbestos containing material over the existing material without disturbing it.
- Removal of the material. This is typically the last choice because it is the most likely to create airborne asbestos fibers.
Asbestos removal:
The state licenses asbestos abatement firms to conduct asbestos removal. You should look for an abatement firm, like Risk Removal, that is in good standing with the state and has a good reputation. You may find cheaper, non-licensed or unprofessional firms, but Risk Removal will use the proper tools, safety equipment and regulated work methods. After the asbestos is removed, you should have a professional inspector view the area to confirm the material is removed and take air samples to ensure that no asbestos fibers remain in the area.
If you think your home has lead paint:
Homes built before 1978 as especially at risk for lead based paint. Ensure that you protect your family from lead hazards found in the soil, in paint and in dust. Protection can be found by washing items that may be put into children’s mouths such as hands, toys, bottles, etc. Clean the home often, especially horizontal surfaces that may collect dust. Minimize the possibility of creating lead dust by not using tools that may create dust such as grinders, scrapers, heat guns, sandpaper, etc.
Lead removal:
